What a magnitude 6 earthquake feels like

Why the same magnitude feels different
Three things reshape a given magnitude by the time it reaches you. Distance is the biggest: shaking fades quickly as waves spread out and lose energy. And ground type can double or halve what you feel: soft valley sediments and landfill amplify shaking, while solid bedrock damps it.
