Denali Fault: Earthquake Risk, History & Live Activity
The Denali Fault is a right-lateral strike-slip fault arcing about 2,000 kilometres across Alaska and into Canada, through the Alaska Range south of Fairbanks. It accommodates crustal deformation driven by the Pacific plate's collision with Alaska, well inland of the subduction zone itself, slipping at roughly 10 to 12 millimetres a year in its central section. It produced one of the largest strike-slip earthquakes recorded in North America in 2002.

The Denali Fault runs mostly through sparsely populated wilderness, so its hazard is measured less by population exposure than by the lifelines that cross it, most notably the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, which was engineered specifically to survive fault offset and did so in 2002. History
The Denali Fault's historical record is dominated by a single, exceptionally large and well-studied earthquake.
- 2002 Denali (M7.9) — ruptured about 340 kilometres across the Denali, Susitna Glacier, and Totschunda faults, with up to nearly 9 metres of horizontal offset, yet caused no deaths in the thinly populated region.

The 2002 rupture released strain along one long section, so that particular stretch is not a near-term concern.
