Why does Washington have earthquakes?

Off Washington's coast, the Juan de Fuca Plate subducts beneath North America along the Cascadia zone. This drives great offshore earthquakes, deep earthquakes within the descending slab, and shallow crustal faults such as the Seattle Fault.
